When building a professional brand, most people know that they should spend a great deal of time focusing their efforts on their areas of expertise. But what if you don’t have expertise in an area that you’d like to pursue? Do you give up on that topic and focus your efforts elsewhere? Absolutely not!
If you don’t have the expertise you need to build your brand, it’s time to start developing that expertise, and here are three steps to do just that:
Step 1: Learn something specific.
You do not need to learn everything there is about a topic. You can have expertise on a particular subset or portion of a topic. As you build these subsets of knowledge, your overall expertise will grow as well.
Step 2: Practice what you’ve learned.
Hearing or watching something’s a good start, but you need to do that task to truly understand it. Practice it several times and under various conditions to let the knowledge sink in.
Step 3: Share what you’ve learned with others.
You learn a topic the best when you teach it to someone else. Once you’ve learned and practiced, teach as many people as you can.
To build expertise, learn something specific, practice it multiple times, and then teach your newfound skill to others.
